Started this Saturday, April 02, the season of Carreras Los 80's in Barcelona. The Spanish competition, dedicated to Touring and Grand Touring cars until the year 1994, headed to the circuit near the city of Barcelona to open the season.
The Spanish competition, organised by Race Ready, was welcomed to the Catalan circuit in the beautiful spring sunshine and by a large crowd of spectators who flocked to the spectacle that is the Espíritu de Montjuïc.
With 40 minutes to get the fastest lap, the 14 cars that made up Carrera Los 80's started their qualifying session. For many, it was the first time around the mythical curves of the Catalan circuit. At stake was the leadership of each category for Sunday's race.
With the first times appearing on the monitors, it was Ricardo Pereira who surprised and headed the grid and the GR1/N category. Followed by Dan Jimenez who, in his Honda Civic, was ahead of the Portuguese driver. Marc and Toni Garcia, both in Honda Civic, followed the newcomer (Jimenez) in the T1400 category. However, just as the session was reaching its ecuador, Pedro Bastos Rezende catapulted his Porsche 911 3.0RS to the top of the timesheets. Thus, the Aurora Garage driver got his first Pole Position of 2022. From his category (GTCOPA), Carlos Beltran in his Porsche 964 RS NGT and Antonio Cubero in his Porsche 968 CS followed.
In the category dedicated to Touring cars up to 2000cc, the T2000, it was the Honda Civic that set the pace. With Dan Jimenez setting the benchmark and lap after lap surpassing his own achievement. Jimenez entered 2022 on the right foot, setting a ballistic time of 2min18.169 beating Toni and Marc Garcia, each on their own Honda Civic.
In the GR1/N, Ricardo Pereira in a Ford Escort RS2000RS was in a league apart. The driver and trainer from Porto quickly found a fast pace and lap after lap he was overtaking his mark. Pereira thus secured the lead for Sunday's race among the competitors in the class dedicated to cars with Group 1 specifications and homologation. The duo, Nuno Breda and António Maia, set the second fastest time within the category. The young duo, still discovering the limits of their Ford Escort RS2000 on the Barcelona circuit, improved their times lap after lap. Ending the session with a time of 2min18.672 beating the Porsche 924 of Albert Franco, who finished the session in third place in the category.
Among the GR2, Manuel Ferrão was the one to leave with the lead of his category. The Lisbon driver, driving his Ford Escort RS1800, overtook Jordi C. Roca's Alfa Romeo GTAm.
Surprising everyone was the driver from the Netherlands, Van Haver Bira. The driver in a BMW 325i set a stunning time of 2min15,466, discussing the starting position with more powerful cars.
Diogo Ferrão, responsible for the organization reveals that "It was a great first day, where many pilots made their debut in our recent competition and we witnessed a qualifying session where times were improving until the end as pilots discovered the Spanish competition. Tomorrow, finally, will be the long-awaited race day after almost 5 months of downtime."
